Muskellunge, more commonly referred to as “Muskie” is a member of the pike family. Muskie are very aggressive and territorial in nature. Patience is needed when stalking the Muskie as they are known as the fish of 1,000 casts, and many experienced Muskie fisherman refer to them as the fish of 10,000 casts. The English River System and Delaney Lake both produce Muskies in the 40 to 50 inch category. For those anglers who have never caught a Muskie and aren’t worried about size, we also keep several boats on a cache lake which produces many smaller Muskies. At Delaney Lake Lodge we practice catch and release for all Muskie.
Best Methods - The two most common methods of Muskie fishing are casting and trolling. The best equipment for Muskie fishing is a 7 to 7 1/2 foot rod with a medium heavy or heavy action. The rod should be equipped with a bait-casting reel. A variety of lines including monofilament, braided, fluorocarbins, fireline and spiderwire can be used. We recommend using 60-80 lb braided line with a 60-80 lb test steel leader.
